Yesterday, the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian expedition consisting of more than fifty vessels departing from a variety of Mediterranean ports and en route to Gaza, was attacked in international waters south of Crete. According to initial accounts, drones, sound bombs, unexplained objects, and pepper spray were utilized to disrupt the mission. Three vessels were involved—Zefiro, Morgana, and Taigete—but no crew members were injured. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced the urgent dispatch of the Italian Navy's multipurpose frigate Fasan, which is already involved in Operation Mare Sicuro north of Crete. “To ensure assistance to Italian citizens on the Flotilla, I authorized the intervention of the ship, which headed to the area for possible rescue operations”, Crosetto explained. The decision was reached following a meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni; Italian and Israeli diplomatic channels were also notified. On the political front, the opposition parties PD, AVS, and M5S occupied the government benches and the Chamber of Deputies yesterday in protest. In the interim, the unions are announcing mobilizations. The CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour) has issued a warning that it is prepared to call a general strike in the event of new attacks, while USB promised permanent demonstrations in one hundred Italian squares.
