Furio Focolari, a sports journalist whose radio and television commentary defined an era, passed away at the age of 78 on Sunday, September 28. Focolari, who had been suffering from ALS for some time, was a well-known voice on RAI and, later, Radio Radio, where he also served as director. Director Ilario Di Giovambattista revealed the news to X, saying, "Goodbye Furio, now rest in peace. Please help us bear this enormous pain and thank you for everything". From the broadcaster’s official profile came another emotional farewell: "Goodbye Furio, it was a show we never wanted to end". Furio, the son of journalist Lorenzo Focolari, was born in Rome in 1947 and has worked in sports communications for many years. He joined RAI in 1976 as a devoted Lazio supporter and quickly rose to prominence on Gr3, covering major events such as the 1982 World Cup in Spain. His voice is closely linked to skiing, having covered Alberto Tomba's golden season and developing a personal friendship with him. Following his time at RAI, Focolari found his second professional home at Radio Radio, where he became a go-to source for listeners and colleagues, reporting on the Olympics, World Cup, and Italian soccer. With his ability to combine passion and expertise, he left a profound mark, becoming a master and model for generations of sportscasters.
