Trentino-Alto Adige has experienced a tourism boom this year, with an increasing number of Italians choosing the mountains over the sea, drawn by unique scenery and a slower, more sustainable pace of life. But in addition to a vacation, there is now the possibility of permanently relocating to these regions, which are characterized by depopulation year-round. Despite being surrounded by stunning beauty, many small villages are suffering population declines as people migrate to cities. In order to mitigate this phenomenon, the Province of Trento has implemented an incentive for individuals who purchase a residence, renovate it, and convert it into their primary residence: those who relocate to one of these municipalities are eligible for a €100,000 non-repayable bonus. A similar effort is being considered in Emilia-Romagna.
