The Italian hazelnut production is being devastated by the climate crisis, bringing a sector that represents Made in Italy excellence to its knees. Italy - the world's second-largest producer after Turkey - is experiencing a significant cost as a result of extreme climate change. With a production of approximately 100 million kilos and nearly 100,000 hectares of cultivated land, the region experiences alternating periods of prolonged droughts and torrential rains during the most delicate flowering periods. In Piedmont, a 70% drop in production is expected, while in Lazio losses in many cases reach 100% for organic farms. This circumstance is prompting confectionery producers to look for alternatives abroad. In 2024 about 76 million kilos of foreign hazelnuts were imported, almost half from Turkey, with a 28% increase in the first five months of 2025. Coldiretti has already requested a natural disaster status for Piedmont and Lazio. The stakes are high: failure to promptly implement climate change adaptation strategies and support measures could result in the loss of not only agriculture, but also an entire supply chain that includes more than 7,000 companies.
