Fincantieri, Europe's largest naval corporation located in Trieste, is developing an innovative protection and defense system capable of forming an invisible dome that covers ports in all dimensions, above and below the waves. "A 25-kilometer tactical naval bubble", says Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of the Trieste-based group, "that extends from the seabed to the digital domain, including sensors, 4D radar, underwater acoustic barriers, sonar detection systems, and unmanned surface and underwater vehicles. All of this is incorporated into command and control centers, allowing for real-time monitoring and warning". In military terms, it may be regarded as a multi-layered wall that combines traditional equipment with cutting-edge technology. Sea-going drones and submarines will serve as sentinels, prepared to intervene to ascertain the nature of intrusions and, if necessary, neutralize them with weapons. Along with this, passive instruments such as next-generation sonars and sensors will detect the noise of incoming ships and identify them without any uncertainty. Or 4D radars, which, in addition to detecting distance, direction, and speed, provide information on vertical movements and are the best at identifying flying drones. Fincantieri manufactures all of this equipment at the "Underwater Hub", the company's newest and most promising branch. The initial implementation of the program will be extremely difficult: safeguarding the port of Odessa, which is the heart of Ukrainian trade. The idea was presented during the reconstruction conference and might be implemented following the end of hostilities.
