President Sergio Mattarella marked the International Day of Older Persons with a message highlighting the crucial role seniors play in society. He described the increase in life expectancy as “one of the most significant phenomena of our time,” reshaping economies, welfare systems, and the fabric of communities worldwide. By 2050, the over-60 population is expected to exceed two billion globally, Mattarella noted, urging societies to adapt by ensuring older generations remain active in work, culture, and civic life. “They must not be seen as passive beneficiaries but as engines of knowledge and experience, giving communities roots,” he said. The president also paid tribute to caregivers, both professionals and family members, who support elderly people daily, prevent isolation, and enable them to remain in social and family contexts. Their often “silent but decisive” contribution, he stressed, deserves recognition and support. Mattarella concluded by calling for policies guided by constitutional principles to build inclusive communities where every individual can continue to fulfill their potential with dignity, regardless of age.
