According to legend, when Saint Francis arrived at Gubbio, confronted the fierce wolf that was terrorizing the population. There were no weapons, no use of force, only words and gestures to persuade the animal to make a pact: the wolf would stop attacking in exchange for food and care from the inhabitants. The story has become a universal symbol of man's coexistence with nature, a reconciliation that is more vital and necessary now than ever. Francis and Brother Wolf. Art Tells the Legend of the Encounter" is the exhibition on display until January 11 at Palazzo dei Consoli in Gubbio, as part of the celebrations for the eighth centenary of the saint’s death (1226–2026), patron of Italy. In a journey that recounts the encounter between Francis and the wolf through different eras and languages, the exhibition brings together for the first time over 250 works from the 15th century to the present, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, manuscripts, and illustrated books from museums, archives, and private collections.
