Podcasts are becoming increasingly popular among new media users. According to the most recent NielsenIQ research, 18 million Italians listened to at least one podcast in the last year, 800,000 more than in 2024, or a 5% growth. In 2018, there were 10.3 million listeners, up 75% in seven years. Alongside the increase in listeners, time spent with podcasts has also risen: on average, a listening session now lasts 28 minutes, four more than last year. People listen to podcasts roughly nine times per month on average, but the proportion that listen at least once a week is increasing. For 16%, it has even become a daily habit. Crime is the most popular genre, with 41% of respondents citing it, although history and politics podcasts also have a strong following (39%). Wellness (33%) comes next, followed by fiction (24%). In terms of formats, in-depth podcasts are at the top (47%), followed by news (42%), investigative (40%), and entertainment (32%).
