The bill aimed at preventing and treating obesity has become law. The Senate accepted the legislation, confirming the text previously approved by the Chamber, with the majority voting in favor and the opposition abstaining. The new legislation acknowledges obesity as a disease in and of itself, including related healthcare services in the Essential Levels of Assistance (LEA) and therefore transferring them to the National Health Service. The law, introduced by parliament, provides a national obesity prevention program, a specific training plan for physicians and pediatricians, and an Observatory inside the Ministry of Health dedicated to investigating and monitoring the issue. The strategy is clearly integrated: prevention, treatment, awareness raising, and research are all combined into a unified intervention framework. According to data given in the parliamentary debate, 12% of Italian adults, or around six million individuals, are obese, with another 40% overweight. The situation among youngsters is equally concerning: almost three out of every ten children suffer from weight issues.
