A step forward for sustainable mobility comes from Expoferroviaria 2025, where the first Italian narrow-gauge train powered exclusively by batteries was presented in Milan. The Swiss company Stadler is producing a train for Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL) that will begin operation on the Altamura-Matera route by the end of 2026. This will help reduce CO₂ emissions significantly. The project, called 'Treen' - funded by the NRRP, the Complementary Fund, and the PON-PAC - entails the construction of seven battery-powered electric trains at a total cost of €63 Million. The new trains will save about 1,300 tons of CO₂ yearly, which is comparable to over 650 international flights. In addition to battery-powered propulsion, the new train incorporates environmental and passenger comfort solutions such as low-consumption LED lighting, recycled seat upholstery, dedicated e-bike parking, large panoramic windows, and low-floor access to ensure accessibility even for people with limited mobility.
