The online trade in stolen or simply counterfeit objects of art and antiquities is expanding. In 2024, the Carabinieri monitored 696 sites, ranging from Facebook to eBay and smaller ones, and began reclaiming 6,000 cultural items. These include about 2,000 archeological and paleontological relics, over 1,000 antique coins, and 51 paintings. Just this year, the Carabinieri returned to a state library in the province of Padua, a 1597 volume stolen in the 19th century and later reappearing on “a well-known e-commerce platform". Another book dated 1535 was returned to the Civica Biblioteca Glemonense in Gemona, Friuli, in May, and was also available for purchase on an e-commerce website. When the Carabinieri detect a suspicious work, they enter it into a database that presently has information on over a million stolen or illegally exported works.
