Despite international volatility, geopolitical tensions, and the global economic slump, foreign tourists continue to come to Italy in big numbers. According to the Intesa San Paolo research center, the increase in overnight stays in Italy will continue this year: from 447 million in 2023 to 466 million in 2024 (+4.3%), and 480 million (+3%) by the end of 2025. According to economic data, foreigners account for 61% of overnight stays, and their contribution to the tourism sector is increasing, while domestic flows are slightly dropping, owing to a decrease in Italian families' holiday spending power. Foreign travelers increase the duration of their vacations by extending their average stay beyond that of resident visitors. Another advantage is the strong links with various productive sectors. In fact, accommodation and food services account for 53% of the tourism sector's added value, with the remaining coming from transportation (air, but increasingly by rail), travel agencies, culture and entertainment, the trade of related goods, and various other industries.
