No one would have anticipated the feasibility of banana production in the central Mediterranean until a few years ago. It is now feasible as a result of climate change. For some time now, there have been reports of agricultural firms investing in tropical crops, particularly in Southern Italy, ranging from avocados to mangos. However, this time, we are not observing an experimental endeavor by small farms to diversify production; rather, we are witnessing the entry of a significant tropical fruit producer. Chiquita, the worldwide banana and pineapple firm, has its eyes on Italy and will begin producing Italian bananas in Sicily for the first time in collaboration with the Alba Bio agricultural cooperative. The initiative will begin in October with the planting of 20,000 organic trees in the lands between Marsala and Campobello di Mazara. The first fruits are expected in 2026.
