Six out of ten Italians recognized the Flotilla's humanitarian mission as having significant symbolic value in shaking up public opinion and governments. For little more than a third, 35%, it was a provocative act. This is the result of a survey done by the Demopolis Institute. The public's perception of Netanyahu's government is becoming increasingly critical: 81% of Italians believe the invasion of Gaza is an excessive and inappropriate reprisal that sacrifices the Palestinian civilian population. For only 15%, it is an essential response to the events of October 7, 2023, to defeat Hamas. "Moral asymmetry" is the most common charge in Tel Aviv: many interviewed felt that Israel had the right to respond to the October 7 attack, but did so unlawfully, as proven by the International Criminal Court. There is also widespread belief that the European Union's stance on the ongoing invasion of Gaza by the Netanyahu administration is weak and irrelevant: 78% agree with this, while a small minority believe von der Leyen's position and the governments that support her are adequate.
