Five autographed letters from King Charles Albert that were taken from Turin's historical archives have been restored to the city. The letters vanished at an unknown time and reappeared at a well-known antiquarian bookshop in Turin. The shop owner stated that a collector had sold them to him, and he immediately recognized their value. These are letters sent by the King between 1835 and the following year to Marquis Emanuele Pes di Villamarina, then First Secretary of State for War and the Navy and First Secretary of State for Sardinian Affairs. The Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage made the return after completing an inquiry into their disappearance, which was coordinated by the Turin prosecutor's office. The returned letters all deal with various political issues, particularly military ones, such as appointments, troop deployments, and actions to be done during a cholera outbreak. The criminal proceedings, which involved two suspects, ended with the case being dismissed due to the statute of limitations and the letters being restored to their rightful owner, the Turin Historical Archives, one of the most important municipal archives in Italy and Europe.
