Italian tourism set a new record in 2024, with 466.2 million overnight stays and 139.6 million total arrivals, according to final Istat data. This is a 4.2% increase over 2023, led mostly by the return of foreign visitors (+8.4%), while Italian tourist flows remained relatively unchanged. In comparison to the pre-pandemic period, Italy outperformed the European average: the number of visitors increased by 6.7% between 2019 and 2024, while the EU average was 5.1%. The difference is in the international component, where international visitors increased by 15.1% compared to the European average of 6.8%, while local demand remained weaker (-1.8% versus +3.6%). Provisional data for the first seven months of 2025 corroborate this trend: foreign visitor numbers are continuing increasing (+3.8%), while Italian tourists are only slightly up (+0.2%), bringing the total to +2.2% over the same time in 2024. Arrivals from abroad now account for more than half of the total (56.6%), a share still rising. The average stay per guest remains stable at 3.38 nights, but peaks occur during the summer months: between June and July, Italian accommodations received 138.1 million overnight stays (a 5.8% increase over 2024), with double-digit growth for foreign visitors (+11.9%) and a slight decline for Italian visitors (-1.1%). All segments contributed to the outstanding performance: the hotel sector increased by 4.6%, while non-hotel accommodations—agritourism, vacation rentals, and bed and breakfasts—increased by 7.4%, proving Italian tourism's vitality and diversification.
