Starting today, Pope Leo XIV will inherit the @Pontifex accounts on X, which were previously used by his predecessors, Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI. The accounts, active in nine languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Polish, Arabic, and Latin), have a total of 52 million followers. The new Pope's official Instagram account is @Pontifex - Pope Leo XIV, which serves as a symbolic and practical continuation of Pope Francis' @Franciscus account. The latter's content will not be deleted but will remain accessible as a commemorative archive known as "Ad Memoriam". Similarly, on X, Pope Francis’s posts will be moved to a dedicated section on the Vatican’s official website, Vatican.va, where they will be preserved for public consultation and historical record. Popes' presence on social media is not a recent phenomenon. Pope Benedict XVI was a digital pioneer for the Church, opening the first @Pontifex Twitter account on December 12, 2012. A few months later, with Pope Francis' election, the account was kept active and expanded.
