By the end of 2026, switching electricity and gas suppliers must be done within 24 hours. The Regulatory Authority is currently in the process of developing a new regulation that, if not postponed, will be implemented in the energy sector commencing next year. This regulation has the potential to significantly alter the competitive dynamics of the market and consumer consumption patterns. What will be the possible impact on Italian bills? While it is difficult to forecast, Facile.it has developed some hypotheses based on what happened in the mobile phone market in 2012, when the price of a €/call fell by 35% in just a year after the implementation of the 24-hour switch. "It's difficult to imagine a similar benefit," said the specialists at Facile.it. "The energy market is characterized by significant differences from the mobile phone market, and the effect on bills will undoubtedly be less significant. In the best-case scenario, this could lead to a reduction of 10% to 15%". If this were the case, it would be a substantial benefit, as it could result in savings of up to €230 per year for a typical family on electricity and gas bills. "However, experts caution, "the significance of this change should not be underestimated, as it could paradoxically result in increased costs for sales companies and, as a result, higher tariffs". The activities connected with switching operators are extensive and complex, and the process, which today takes an average of 45 days, will need to be reduced to a few hours by 2026. This, however, will not have an impact on the quality of checks, which are equally critical in combating problems such as energy tourism and corporate fraud. From the perspective of businesses, this new scenario could result in a significant reduction in revenue: it is estimated that up to €7 billion in revenue could shift between operators or be jeopardized due to the increased mobility and competition caused by the rapid switch.
