Following years of delays and uncertainty, 2025 marks the start of an unprecedented period of data center investment in Italy. According to the most recent IDA (Italian Data Center Association) analysis, the market is prepared to quadruple installed capacity, from 287 megawatts in 2024 to more than one gigawatt in 2028, before hitting the two gigawatt milestone three years later, in 2031. The analysis predicts that over the next five years, spending on data center construction and equipment would top €21.8 billion, led by artificial intelligence and cloud giants. Global hyperscalers will drive growth. Microsoft has already boosted its investment in Italy to €10 billion between 2025 and 2026, while Amazon Web Services has announced a €1.2 billion expansion of its facilities in Milan. Other initiatives are underway in the region, including the Data4 and Apto campuses. Eni will also develop a one-gigawatt AI-ready data center in Ferrera Erbognone (Pavia) using low-emission blue power.
