Dan Peterson, a basketball legend, attended the 2025 Trento Sports Festival on October 9th. Speaking to the press at the event "Dan Peterson: Sport is the Training Ground for Life", he reflected on his career and his time in Chile before moving to Italy. Dan Peterson, an American journalist, television commentator, and basketball coach who has been a member of the Italian Basketball Hall of Fame since 2012, introduced a "new mentality" to basketball in Italy, which originated in the United States: "But let's not forget Chile", he told reporters. “That’s where I truly understood basketball—where I coached a player who was already over 22 years old. American basketball provided a framework, while Chilean basketball prepared me for Italy. The two things combined aided me enormously." Dan Peterson's career as a coach in American universities began in 1963. In 1971, he took over as head coach of the Chilean national team, who finished sixth at the South American Games. Two years later, he began his career in Italy, first with Virtus Bologna, where he won the 1974 Italian Cup and the 1976 Scudetto, and then with Olimpia Milano, where he won four Scudettos, two Italian Cups, and a European Cup from 1978 to 1987.
