A period film set in the 1930s—possibly a reinterpretation of Thomas Mann’s “Buddenbrooks”—centered on four generations of a southern Italian family navigating the social and economic transformations of the early 20th century. There has been a lot of conjecture about Francis Ford Coppola's upcoming film, starting with the title, which is said to be "Distant Vision". One thing is certain: filming will take place in Calabria, with sets spread between Reggio Calabria, Cosenza, and Scilla. According to rumors, Coppola intends to shoot the film as a "live cinema", with both the visual and audio recorded live. "Distant Vision is more ambitious than Megalopolis", Coppola told Le Monde when the project was still in development. "It was inspired by Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks, which depicts the narrative of a three-generation family amid the German economic boom. My film will depict the narrative of a three-generation family whose lives have been changed by the invention of television. It will be shot in a form I call ‘live cinema'".
