Tragedy struck the center of Palermo in Olivella, an historic downtown neighborhood located just steps from the Teatro Massimo. Paolo Taormina, 21, was killed while trying to stop a group of young men who were attacking a peer. The victim was the son of the owners of a well-known bar in the nightlife area. As per the initial reports, a group of young individuals initiated a brawl in Piazza Spinuzza at approximately 3:30 a.m. last night, among the tables of the "O Scruscio" bar, which is owned by Taormina's parents. The victim intervened to calm things down, and it appears like the problem was successfully resolved. Shortly after, however, the situation spiraled out of control: initially reports spoke of a gunshot to the head, later of a stabbing. Yet, the precise circumstances of the assassination are still uncertain. Late Sunday morning, Carabinieri detained Gaetano Maranzano, 28, originally from the Zen district, at his residence in the Uditore area, along with his partner. A gun was discovered during the search. Maranzano confessed, stating that he met the victim by coincidence on the night of the murder while intervening to break up the dispute. He claimed he lost control because Taormina had harassed his partner some time before. Investigators are verifying his account. Details are also appearing on social media: on TikTok, Maranzano posted a selfie of himself with a long beard and various gold necklaces, including a revolver-shaped pendant, accompanied by background music that screams, "You're arresting me for what? For the murder of Michele Navarra…". His young daughter is also shown in the images, holding a gun-shaped pendant.
