After three years of major investments, the Italian supercomputing sector continues to grow, even beyond the NRRP framework. This is the outcome of the annual meeting of the ICSC – National Research Center in HPC, Big Data, and Quantum Computing, which concluded on the Island of Elba. The panel examined developments in a variety of areas connected to supercomputers and quantum computers and projected the center's future direction. The ICSC National Supercomputing Center, established in 2022 with €320 million in NRRP funding, aims to create a national network in this field, develop new generations of researchers in the field, and foster the creation of projects and businesses capable of exploiting the capabilities offered by supercomputers. During the meeting, the primary objectives of the center's numerous spokespersons were delineated, including specific thematic lines of research, such as quantum computers. Paolo Cremonesi, the leader of ICSC's spoke 10 dedicated to quantum computing, stated, "Perhaps the most remarkable accomplishment in our field has been assisting Italy in closing a gap it had with Europe and the rest of the world". Cremonesi added that Italy already had strong expertise and top-level researchers, but lacked the ability to act as a system, build devices, and implement concrete initiatives. Now all of that exists.
