Foreign laborers generate €177 billion in GDP, which accounts for 9% of the added value generated by employment in Italy (€1,966 billion). Workers with non-Italian citizenship number 2.51 million, accounting for 10.5% of the total workforce. Although the number of employed workers of non-Italian origin is actually higher, the acquisition of citizenship progressively eliminates these workers from the foreign workforce statistics. At the beginning of 2024, there were roughly two million Italian citizens who held foreign nationality. Agriculture (18%) and construction (16.4%) account for the largest share of total added value generated by foreigners. According to Eurostat projections, by 2050 Italy’s resident population will decline by almost one million people (to 58 million inhabitants), with a loss of three million workers compared to 2024. However, without immigration and considering only natural birth and death rates, Italy would lose nine million residents and 6.8 million workers by 2050.
