In 2024, Italian roads recorded an increase in accidents involving injuries compared to the previous year. While the overall number of deaths remained relatively unchanged, there was an increase in injuries. Every day, Italy experiences an average of hundreds of incidents involving pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Istat has updated its road accident data, providing more detailed information by province and road type. Compared to 2019—the year taken as a reference by the European Commission for its 2030 target of halving fatalities and serious injuries—in almost half of Italian provinces the number of deaths has increased, while in others it has decreased or remained stable. Only three provinces—Verbano-Cusio Ossola, Campobasso, and Gorizia—achieved the objective of reducing the number of fatalities by half with respect to 2019. Avellino, Sassari, Barletta-Andria-Trani, and Oristano were among the provinces with the highest rises in deaths, whereas Milan, Venice, Bologna, and Rome showed considerable decreases compared to the previous year. The data corroborate that road safety continues to be a significant challenge in Italy, with encouraging results in certain regions but with a national level that is still far from the European target.
