Italian satire loses, at least for now, one of its longest-running voices. Il Vernacoliere, the historic monthly known for its sharp wit and Tuscan humor, will suspend publication after its November issue.
The announcement came directly from founder and editor Mario Cardinali, who shared the news on the magazine’s official Facebook page. “After sixty-five years,” he wrote, “Il Vernacoliere is taking a break — waiting, as we often do, for better times.”
Cardinali pointed to a combination of factors behind the hiatus, notably “the deepening crisis of print media,” which continues to reshape the publishing industry.
Founded in Livorno in 1961 under the name Livornocronaca – Il Vernacoliere, the publication evolved into a monthly satire magazine in 1982. Over the years, it became a cultural landmark — a blend of local dialect, national satire, and unapologetic irreverence that reflected the very soul of Livorno.
