An “acid trip”: that’s how Mel Gibson has described "The Resurrection of Christ", the long-awaited sequel that, more than twenty years later, will continue the story of "The Passion of the Christ", recounting the events taking place three days after Jesus’s crucifixion. This “journey", co-written by Gibson and Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace, will once again be filmed in Italy, featuring an entirely renewed yet still very Italian cast. Filming began last week at Rome's Cinecittà Studios and is scheduled to continue in the ancient city of Matera, as well as Ginosa, Gravina Laterza, and Altamura. Among the film’s protagonists — which will be divided into two parts — alongside Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus, are Italian actors Kasia Smutniak as Mary, Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate, and Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter. "The Resurrection of Christ - Part One," produced by Gibson, Bruce Davey, and their Icon Productions with Lionsgate as a studio partner, is set for release on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, with "Part Two" following 40 days later on Ascension Day, May 6. Lionsgate will distribute both films theatrically.
