In 2024, the year Italy was Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair, publishers increased the sale of translation rights for Italian works abroad by 8%, totaling 8,484 contracts. This is the second-best result, following 2019, since the Italian Publishers Association started tracking them in 2001. However, the Italian book market is currently experiencing a decline: in 2024, it closed at €3.234 billion, a 1.4% decrease from the previous year. The drop continued in 2025, with the trade sector alone (fiction and nonfiction printed books sold in physical and online bookstores and supermarkets) falling by 2% in value and 2.7% in volume from January and September. In the first nine months, 1.9 million fewer copies were sold than the previous year, albeit minor signs of recovery have seen since July. These are the main findings presented by the Italian Publishers Association at the Frankfurt Book Fair in the annual State of Publishing Report.
