On the occasion of the National Italian American Foundation's (NIAF) 50th anniversary, President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sent two greeting messages emphasizing the Italian-American community's critical role in Italy-US relations. In his message, Mattarella reflected on the role of Italian Americans in the development of the United States, stating, "American citizens of Italian descent have contributed to the greatness of the United States by bringing with them ingenuity, humanity, solidarity, and diligence".
The Head of State then praised the NIAF for having successfully "strengthened social, cultural, and economic relations between the two countries", describing it as "a solid and dynamic point of reference, capable of creating an ideal bridge between the origins of the past and a future of dialogue and understanding". Mattarella concluded by expressing his hope that the Foundation "will continue to be a vehicle for encounter, friendship, and collaboration between our peoples".
In a video message presented during the gala in Washington, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed joy and support, saying, "Italy and the United States are not only allies, but pillars of the free world. We are united in our commitment to freedom and to guarantee that this ocean of opportunity remains unobstructed for an additional fifty years". Meloni emphasized the necessity of maintaining common values like "faith, freedom, and family", and cautioned against "forces that seek to rewrite history and erase shared traditions" through "woke culture". In this setting, the prime minister strongly supported Columbus Day, "a symbol of Italian-American heritage", saying, "We will not let it happen; Columbus Day is here to stay". "NIAF has been the unwavering voice, the beating heart, and the backbone of the Italian-American community for half a century," Meloni concluded.
