With 1,094 days in office since its swearing-in on October 22, 2022, Giorgia Meloni’s government has become the third longest-serving cabinet in the history of the Italian Republic. It surpasses the government led by Bettino Craxi (August 4, 1983 – August 1, 1986), which lasted 1,093 days.
At the top of the longevity ranking are two of Silvio Berlusconi’s administrations: the Berlusconi II government, which held office for 1,412 days (June 11, 2001 – April 23, 2005), followed by Berlusconi IV at 1,287 days (May 8, 2008 – November 16, 2011).
Interestingly, the three longest-serving governments in Italian history have all been center-right. The longest-serving center-left government remains Matteo Renzi’s cabinet, fifth on the list, with 1,024 days in office (February 22, 2014 – December 12, 2016).
In terms of overall tenure among Italian prime ministers, Meloni ranks ninth, behind Berlusconi (3,339 days), Alcide De Gasperi (2,458), Giulio Andreotti (2,219), Aldo Moro (2,279), Amintore Fanfani (1,659), Romano Prodi (1,608), Bettino Craxi (1,353), and Mariano Rumor (1,104).
