After previously studying male bodybuilders, the research team led by Professor Marco Vecchiato at the University of Padua examined mortality among competitive female bodybuilders. The study, published in the European Heart Journal, tracked over 9,000 athletes competing in IFBB events from 2005 to 2020. Researchers identified 32 confirmed deaths, over 30% due to sudden cardiac events. “Although fewer in number, female athletes also face a surprisingly high rate of sudden cardiac death, especially professionals,” explained Vecchiato. The study also highlighted deaths from trauma, including suicides and homicides, suggesting significant psychosocial pressures in a sport centered on body image and visibility. “In disciplines where the female body is the focus, mental health and societal pressures must be part of the conversation,” Vecchiato noted.
