A court in Istanbul condemned two young men to 24 years in prison for the murder of Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi, the 14-year-old son of Italian chef Andrea Minguzzi and Turkish cellist Yasemin Akincilar. The sentence concerns the allegation of "premeditated murder of a minor" and is the maximum sentence that can be imposed in this case. According to local media, the convicted are two 15-year-old teenagers, identified as U.B. and B.B. Mattia died on February 9th, after spending nearly two weeks in intensive care as a result of injuries sustained in a knife attack. The attack took place in a street market in the Kadikoy area, with a 15-year-old stabbing him many times and a second youngster of the same age kicking him after he went to the ground. Two other defendants in the case were acquitted. All of those responsible were apprehended on the same day of the attack. Andrea Minguzzi, Mattia's father and chief executive chef at Eataly in Istanbul, said his son did not know the attackers, who appeared to have started the attack without any motive. Shortly before the attack, in late January, Mattia had gone to the Kadikoy market with friends to buy accessories for his skateboard, one of his passions. The attack was captured on video, with the fourteen-year-old being repeatedly stabbed with a knife before being kicked to the ground by another adolescent. Mattia's death caused a wave of grief across Turkey. A large crowd gathered in front of the Kartal courthouse, where the trial was held, to show their support for the family. In the months that followed, the parents received letters of solidarity from politicians and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Regrettably, the incident was also characterized by instances of symbolic violence: the family received death threats and the boy's grave was vandalized.
