Trento has returned to the top of the Urban Ecosystem 2025 podium, an annual report that assesses the environmental performance of Italy's 106 provincial capitals. Trento leads the national rankings with a score of 79.78%, followed by Mantua (78.74%) and Bergamo (71.82%). Bolzano (71.54%) ranks fourth. The Urban Ecosystem survey, now in its thirty-second edition, uses 19 indicators organized into six macro-areas (air, water, waste, mobility, urban environment, and energy) to assess the health and sustainability of Italian cities. Over 30 million data points were reviewed in all, with information obtained from other certified statistical sources as well as surveys issued by Legambiente to the 106 provincial capitals. Trento ranks in the top ten Italian cities for waste management, with 443 kg of municipal garbage per capita per year and an 82.3% collection rate (83.6% in 2024). Additionally, mobility data is noteworthy: public transportation accounts for 140 trips per capita annually (up from 143 last year) and 46 vehicle kilometers per inhabitant (up from 44), indicating a system that is efficient, extensive, and well-used. Trento ranks among the top in Italy for renewable energy installed in public buildings, with 15.4 kW per 1,000 inhabitants.
