Marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, Italian President Sergio Mattarella reaffirmed Italy’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism and to the UN’s role in promoting peace, development, and human rights. Mattarella emphasized that the founding principles of the UN Charter remain as relevant as ever, serving as a moral compass for the dignity of all peoples and individuals. He reminded that Italy’s engagement with the UN is a key pillar of its foreign policy, grounded in Article 11 of the Italian Constitution, which rejects war as a means of resolving disputes. Belief in the United Nations, the President stated, means turning international solidarity into tangible actions — fostering cooperation based on respect for law and mutual understanding rather than domination. He also expressed support for Secretary-General António Guterres’ “UN80” initiative and renewed Italy’s call for reform of the Security Council to make it more representative, accountable, and effective in addressing global crises and the alarming spread of armed conflicts.
