Italian bishops have approved—with a large majority (185 no, 637 yes)—a document calling on the Church to take a stand against pedophilia, homophobia, and transphobia. The final document suggests that "the 'days' promoted by civil society to combat all forms of violence and to demonstrate solidarity with those who are hurt and discriminated against (Days against gender violence and discrimination, pedophilia, bullying, femicide, homophobia and transphobia, etc.)" be supported through prayer and reflection. The Synod of Bishops urges the overcoming of "discriminatory attitudes" toward gay and transgender individuals (154 against, 672 in favor), extending its reach to the LGBTQ community and to those "who wish to pursue paths of greater ecclesial integration, but are marginalized from ecclesial and sacramental life due to stable emotional and family situations other than the sacrament of marriage, such as second unions, de facto cohabitations, marriages, and civil unions". It also proposes investigating the concept of a "women's diaconate" (188 votes against, 625 in favor; this is the most contentious proposal). Broad consensus was also achieved with respect to the proposals concerning victims of sexual abuse, which advocate for collaboration with Italian institutions, prevention, and treatment. The document now moves to dioceses, which will determine how to implement its proposals in practice.
