The European Union is reopening applications for DiscoverEU, a program that allows 18-year-olds to explore Europe by rail for free. The 2025 edition marks the 40th anniversary of the Schengen Agreement, which, in 1985, created the groundwork for unrestricted movement within the Union. Applications will be accepted from October 30th through November 13th. Selected young people will receive a travel pass that allows them to travel for up to 30 days. The trip can begin on March 1st, 2026, giving them the freedom to determine the itinerary, stops, and duration within the timeframe specified. The primary means of travel will be by train, in second or economy class. Participants will also receive a DiscoverEU discount card, which entitles them to savings on lodging, cultural events, sports activities, and public transportation. DiscoverEU is reserved for young people who have turned 18 or will turn 18 in 2025. Each country has a restricted number of passes, which are determined by its population. Germany tops the list with 6,837 tickets, followed by France (5,540) and Italy (4,888). If some countries do not assign all their passes, the remaining ones will be redistributed among the others.
