Alessandro Melzi d'Eril is the new CEO of Mediobanca, the financial group founded in 1946 by Raffaele Mattioli and Enrico Cuccia. He succeeds Alberto Nagel, who was removed following the successful takeover by MPS bank and entrepreneurs Caltagirone and Delfin (Del Vecchio). Former Treasury Minister Vittorio Grilli will join him as chairman. Alessandro Melzi d'Eril, 50, will become the youngest CEO in Italy's major financial institutions. He was born in Milan, attended Severi Scientific High School, and obtained a degree in Economics from Bocconi University. He began his career in international finance in London at Dresdner Kleinwort Benson. He subsequently worked at Unicredit, Clessidra, and lastly Anima, where he turned a project into one of Italy's leading asset management firms. The new CEO of Mediobanca is an aristocrat, belonging to a Lombard dynasty whose most famous member is Francesco Melzi d’Eril — a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci and custodian of his codices after the inventor’s death — along with another Francesco, who was vice president of the Cisalpine Republic under Napoleon, as reported by Corriere della Sera. The third Francesco to keep in mind is Alessandro’s brother, a film producer.
