Approximately a thousand construction sites are located throughout the peninsula to strengthen and modernize the national electricity transmission and gas transportation networks, with the majority concentrated in the center-north, where Lombardy leads with 168 construction sites, Emilia-Romagna has 152, and Piedmont has 88. When factoring investments, new connections, and other real-economy projects, this huge quantity of work results in a €34 billion return for the system. Among the most important projects are the Adriatic Line, the largest Italian gas transportation infrastructure project in the last decade, and the Tyrrhenian Link, a new electricity corridor in the center of the Mediterranean that will cost around €3.7 billion and include a double submarine cable connecting Sicily to Sardinia. Snam's interventions are also noteworthy. Between now and 2029, the energy firm plans to invest €8 billion on booster and storage facilities around the country, with another €8 billion going toward replacing, improving, and developing new lines, booster stations, and storage facilities. Tema (electricity grid) has set aside €16.6 billion in its 2024-2028 business plan to expand and improve the national power transmission grid.
