Starting November 12, to browse Pornhub, OnlyFans, or XVideos — to name just a few of the most popular porn sites — users will have to prove they are of legal age. Yesterday, the Italian Communications Authority published a list of 48 websites, in accordance with the law that mandates age verification to prevent minors from accessing pornographic content. The list contains both websites and platforms for sharing user-generated hardcore content. Simply clicking the box "I'm over 18" will no longer be sufficient; genuine verification will be necessary, yet without jeopardizing privacy. According to the Authority, the method is based on an anonymous "token" provided by a third-party entity—a bank, cell operator, or other certifying body—that verifies the user's age without disclosing their identity or personal information. As a result, the site will only recognize the user as an adult, not their identity. Verification will occur through an identification website or an app, in the case of mobile browsing. To make the process easier, the European Commission created T-Scy, an app already tested in Italy that creates a verification code on your smartphone. It is anticipated that it will be incorporated into the European digital wallet by 2026. This will allow users to access official documents and verify their age with a fingerprint or retina scan.
