Italy is sustaining its investment in environmental initiatives, demonstrating substantial progress by planting over three million new trees by 2024, thereby encompassing nearly 4,000 hectares. This investment in natural capital is projected to yield an annual economic benefit of over €20 million through ecosystem services throughout the lifespan of the planted trees and vegetation. This is shown in Legambiente's annual report, Forest Atlas. This method goes beyond merely counting trees and converts the numerous benefits—known as ecosystem services—provided by new green infrastructure into economic value. Among the most important are the mitigation of extreme weather events and the regulation of air and soil quality, which are estimated at €2,202.9 per hectare per year. One of the most important factors to examine is sociocultural value, which includes the favorable influence on tourism and leisure activities and is projected to be €639.2 per acre per year. Another essential element is the "legacy value", which ensures the preservation of healthy, biodiversity-rich ecosystems for future generations, estimated at €2,342.50 per hectare annually. However, completely harnessing the economic potential of new reforestation efforts relies on an increasingly vital factor: the capacity of newly planted trees to endure and prosper amidst a changing climate.
