“America”, the famous golden toilet by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan (1960) — one of his most iconic works — will be auctioned at Sotheby’s “The Now and Contemporary Evening Auction” in New York on 18 November 2025. The valuation, unprecedented in auction history, is directly proportional to the weight of the artwork in gold, calibrated according to the prevailing rate as of October 31, 2025: $10 million for 101.2 kilos. In a market defined by subjective value, this work “chooses” to value itself. But that is not all. While waiting for the sale, the toilet will be installed—it is unclear where—at the Breuer Building in New York, Sotheby's new headquarters, which will open this year following a lengthy makeover. The building that once housed the Whitney Museum now serves as the site for the new exhibition of the world's most luxury toilet, which attempts to challenge and overturn norms such as valuation, even in the world of auction. It made its debut at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in September 2016 as a fully functional toilet with an 18-karat gold patina. An installation that combined provocative with intellectual references, reflecting on creative language and redefining its boundaries.
