In the first six months of 2025, 361 journalists in Italy were threatened — up from 203 in the same period of 2024 — according to data from the Ossigeno per l’Informazione Observatory. Threats from political figures, particularly local ones, have increased. Lombardy faces the highest risks, followed by Lazio and Sicily. The Ossigeno per l'Informazione Observatory released the most recent monitoring data on October 28, 2025, during a meeting celebrating the UN International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. The Observatory's findings for the first six months of 2025 showed that the number of threats had nearly doubled compared to the same time the previous year. The rise was 78%. The number of incidents categorized as intentional infringements on freedom of information rose by 46%: 107 such incidents were identified, compared to 73 during the first half of 2024. Threats from public officials have risen, especially from representatives of local institutions (municipal or regional), who predominantly resort to unfounded complaints (in one-third of cases), social media threats, or remarks, the latter of which saw an increase compared to the first half of 2024 (+17%). Lombardy, Lazio, and Sicily remain the regions with the highest number of journalists under threat.
