In 2024, Italy recycled 76.7% of the packaging on the market, or over 10.7 million tons out of a total of over 13.95 million tons. This reflects an increase of around one percentage point over 2023, when recycled packaging totaled about 10.5 million tons. The volume of reused packaging also experienced a modest increase in 2024. This is the snapshot that the Conai consortium provides of the state of packaging management in the country in its annual report. "These figures demonstrate an effective system that has, over time, successfully integrated a collaborative network among businesses, institutions, and citizens", remarked Ignazio Capuano, President of Conai. "Achieving a packaging recycling rate exceeding 76% represents a substantial accomplishment, attributable to collaborative efforts, particularly in light of the European Union's target of 70% by 2030". Specifically, in Italy, over 435,500 tons of steel; 62,400 tons of aluminum; 4.605 million tons of paper and cardboard; 2.314 million tons of wood; 1.131 million tons of conventional plastic; 47,500 tons of compostable bioplastic—amounting to a total of 1.179 million tons—and nearly 2.103 million tons of glass have been diverted for reuse. A noteworthy advancement pertains to the plastics supply chain, which, in 2024, successfully surpassed the 50% recycling target set by the EU for 2025.
