Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) aims to enter Germany’s high-speed rail market. The goal of offering Frecciarossa services to German passengers is part of the growth strategy led by CEO Stefano Donnarumma. The plan's tables show that FS intends to increase its high-speed passenger base abroad by 60%, from 9 million to 14.4 million by 2029. The primary markets anticipated to drive this growth, surpassing one and a half times the current traffic volumes, will be France (including the anticipated connection between Paris and London beneath the English Channel by 2029), Spain, and, naturally, Germany. Donnarumma himself confirmed this, telling the Handelsblatt daily that the operation will eventually include the deployment of 50 high-speed trains to the German network. "We are considering expanding our business in Germany to the profitable high-speed train sector", Donnarumma told journalists. If implemented, FS would become the first company to compete on a large scale with Deutsche Bahn on Germany’s national high-speed network.
