The Sentinel-1D satellite, part of Europe's Copernicus programme, was successfully launched from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana using an Ariane 6 rocket managed by Arianespace. The announcement was made by Thales Alenia Space, the joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), which served as the primary contractor for the satellite's production. Sentinel-1D is a vital element of the Copernicus programme, the Earth observation segment of the European Union's space initiative, overseen by the European Commission and co-financed by the European Union and the European Space Agency (ESA). With Sentinel-1D in orbit, the Sentinel-1 family is complete. This new satellite, the final member of the initial Copernicus constellation, will assure the system's continued functioning and the enhancement of existing missions for at least the next seven years, if not longer. Sentinel-1D's upgraded radar equipment will allow it to photograph the Earth's surface both day and night, independent of weather conditions. The acquired data will be used in a variety of scientific and environmental applications, helping to safeguard the world and manage it sustainably.
