The number of young individuals in agriculture is increasing. In the second quarter of 2025, the number of persons under 35 working in the fields climbed by 18% over the previous year, reaching 122,000. This is according to a Coldiretti analysis based on Istat data, which contradicts the 2% reduction seen among young individuals working in other areas. Italian agriculture is changing: conventional responsibilities are increasingly being supplemented by digitization and multifunctional activities. Along with tractor driver and pruner, new occupations are emerging, including agricultural data analyst, drone operator, precision agriculture specialist, and sustainability consultant. According to the analysis, there are around 50,000 agricultural firms in Italy owned by people under the age of 35, with the majority located in Sicily, Puglia, and Campania. Young farms stand out for their average production of €4,500 per hectare, which is double the European average, thanks to high-value-added crops and the implementation of innovative technologies.
