Lucia Laura Sangenito, aged 114, is Italy's oldest woman. She was born on November 22, 1910, therefore her 115th birthday celebrations are only a few days away. Sangenito was born in Sturno, in the province of Avellino, where she still resides. Hers is a curious and unusual case, due in part to the fact that few people in Italy can claim to have lived past the age of 110, and also because centenarian data released a few days ago by ISTAT (the Italian National Institute of Statistics) show that Campania has one of the lowest rates of centenarians per capita. Isernia, in Molise, has the highest rate of centenarians, at just over 78 per 100,000 residents. Nuoro, in Sardinia, comes in second place, having been known and studied for years for its exceptionally high longevity rate. Siena ranks third, followed by Gorizia, Imperia, Genoa, and La Spezia. Given that Liguria has one of the greatest populations of the elderly in Italy, the presence of so many Ligurian provinces is not surprising. At the start of 2025, there were 23,548 centenarians in Italy, more than 2,000 higher than the previous year's total of 21,211. Eighty-three percent are women.
