Italy’s steel industry generated around 20 million tons of steel in 2024, marking a 5% drop compared to the previous year. The sector’s annual revenue is estimated between €40 and €60 billion, employing over 70,000 people directly. The figures were released during the 2025 General Assembly of Federacciai, the national association of steel producers. Despite the decline, the first nine months of 2024 showed encouraging signs of recovery: steel output reached 15.5 million tons, up 3.2% year-on-year. According to Federacciai president Antonio Gozzi, around 90% of Italy’s steel is now produced using electric arc furnaces fueled by recycled scrap — a rare model in Europe. The industry has also achieved major environmental progress, cutting CO₂ emissions by 66% since 1990. Italy now boasts the lowest carbon intensity per ton of steel in the European Union — 40% below the EU average and 61% lower than China’s.
