Suitcase and medical file in hand, thousands of Italians leave home every year in search of adequate medical treatment elsewhere. Healthcare mobility currently values approximately €5 billion: in 2023, there were 668,000 hospitalizations occurring outside the region. This situation penalizes everyone: patients forced to relocate, southern regions losing resources, and northern regions overburdened with demands that extend wait times. However, the most recent Agenas analysis debunks the idea of "health tourism". Between 2019 and 2023, out-of-region hospitalizations declined, whereas mobility for extremely complex procedures—such as oncology, transplants, and cardiac surgery—increased by 12%, indicating that individuals are compelled to seek care elsewhere rather than doing so voluntarily. The primary beneficiaries are accredited private hospitals, which handle three-quarters of the most demanding treatments. While the public healthcare system fails, the private sector receives the most lucrative benefits. For patients, however, travel remains the only way to exercise a basic right: receiving dignified care, even far from home.
