The consumption of psychotropic medicines among children aged 0 to 17 has nearly quadrupled in less than 10 years, rising from 20.6 packets per 1,000 children in 2016 to 59.3 packs in 2024. These figures increase, peaking at 129.1 packs per 1,000 children aged 12 to 17, representing a 1.17% prevalence. In practice, more than one in every hundred youngsters takes psychotropic medicines on a regular basis. Drugs used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are witnessing a significant increase (+25% in a single year). With these figures, Italy remains far behind other nations, such as the United States, where roughly one in every four adolescents uses psychotropic medicines, but the upward trend is now evident. The information regarding this concerning increase is included in the most recent OsMed 2024 Report on medicine utilization in Italy, recently published by the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA).
